How to get the best out of your rewards credit card?

Rewards credit cards are probably the hottest type of credit cards that are out there due to the fact that they allow you to save money and get rewards on your purchases. Whether you are an affiliate marketer or a serial car renter, you can get that specific card that will give you cash/credit back or future rewards when you use it for your fees. For instance, if you commute to work for 3 hours a day, then having a gas credit card will allow you to save some money and maybe invest it or use it for more gas. But how can you maximize the reward that you get from your rewards credit card (surprising not many people know how to manage their rewards cards)? Here is how:
- Get the right card: applying for a credit card is more than just clicking on an apply button and filling out an application. You need to have a plan for your credit card. If you don’t need a credit card, then you should probably not apply for one. But if your commute to work is 2-3 hours and you see that gas fees are a big part of your total monthly costs, then you should shop for a gas credit card. Now you maybe tempted to get a travel card because it looks more attractive, but make sure you actually use the rewards. I have personally made this mistake a few times and gotten rewards credit cards that do not offer the type of rewards that I can take advantage of. In other words, if you don’t travel much, then limit your search to cards that offer rewards that can help you save on an everyday basis.
- Look at the big picture: When applying for the card, don’t just compare the APRs and the annual fees. A card that has an annual fee could end up saving you more in a year. Think about the big picture. Your goal should be to maximize your rewards so you an save more. For instance, the Plum card charges an annual fee but in general is more suited for businesses than an Advanta card. It all comes down to what you need and trying to find a card that fits your needs.
- Look at the Credit Card Partners: credit card companies often partner with many companies which provide useful services to their card holders. If you are getting a Gas credit card or a hotel card, make sure your favorite Gas company or Hotel is covered by your credit card. You don’t want to start going to a different more expensive gas station just because your credit card company doesn’t have a relationship with Shell (for example).
- Carefully Consider The Limits: when comparing credit card offers, make sure you understand the limits that are put on your rewards. Some credit cards offer you 5% cash back but only on your first $1,000 in purchases and 1% for the rest. If you spend $5,000 a month with your credit cads, then you are better off with a card that offers you 2% in statement credit (with no limits).
- Don’t Forget The Bonuses: The credit card industry is very competitive, so you can expect the card issuers to try and up each other on bonuses and rewards. Make sure you take advantage and get the bonuses that can help you save the most. When credit card companies compete, us consumers win.
When it comes to applying for a rewards credit card, make sure you get the right rewards and bonuses that will help you maximize your savings. Have a plan and follow it when applying for a card. Finally, once you get the card, make sure to redeem the rewards and put them to good use. Good luck.
